The city of Newcastle in the Northeast of England is the 20th largest in the country and is one of England's oldest settlements.
Built on the mouth of the Tyne River, in the past Newcastle was a major coal mining city before becoming one of the world's biggest ship building and ship repair centres. As with many parts of the country, these industries decline and Newcastle was forced to re-invent itself, becoming a centre for culture and business and one of the United Kingdom's nightlife hotspots.
Over the years, the popularity and stature of Newcastle's nightlife has grown and grown, winning the city worldwide recognition for its ability to show its residents and visitors a good time.
In recent years, the travel series Rough Guide named the Newcastle nightlife as the number one tourist attraction in Great Britain; the city came third in Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Destination Awards for European Nightlife Destinations after London and Berlin; and finished seventh in the awards which included the rest of the world.
The majority of Newcastle's nightlife is found in two hugely popular areas - the Bigg Market and the Quayside in the city centre - but there are a number of other areas within Newcastle that have plenty to offer.
Both the Bigg Market and the Quayside are home to a phalanx of bars, pubs and clubs but great venues can also be found on Collingwood Street, Neville Street, the area around Central Station and along Osbourne Road which can be found in the Jesmond part of the city.
A new addition to Newcastle's bustling after dark scene is The Gate, a large indoor complex in the city centre filled with restaurants, bars and trendy clubs.
Such has the popularity of Newcastle as a nightspot grown over the past 10 years, licensing hours have been changed and the city has seen an influx of more high-end establishments.
As well as all the pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants, Newcastle is also home to three casinos: Aspers Casino Newcastle, Circus Casino Newcastle and the G Casino Newcastle.
Aspers Casino can be found at The Gate in the heart of the city and is open 24 hours a day, providing 24-hour parking facilities. Aspers is home to the standard casino games - blackjack, roulette, slots, dice and three-card poker - has a dedicated poker room complete with Omaha and Texas Hold'em Poker and a 'Time to Play' area where newcomers to the casino can come and learn the ropes before playing.
Other features of Aspers include a restaurant, two bars and a spa.
Circus Casino Newcastle is situated on Forth Street and has a wide selection of casino games including punto banco, big six, three-card poker, blackjack and American roulette. Circus also has a Poker League which operates on Wednesday nights, Thursday nights and Friday nights.
Dining options can also be found at Circus and patrons can also enjoy special offers on beverages.
The G Casino Newcastle has yet to open but can be found on St James Boulevard and will be accessible 24 hours a day when it's doors open.
As well as its nightlife, Newcastle is famous as a sporting city and is home to Newcastle United Football Club and Newcastle Falcon Rugby Football Union Club to name but two and is also the location for the Great North Run, the world's largest half marathon.
Other attractions include the city's many bridges, in particular the Tyne Bridge built by Dorman Long.
